Kiyomizudera

October 2019
Location
Kyoto, Japan

7.5 x 9 inch

Cotton
One of the architectural techniques I admire most in historical temples is wood joinery. Kiyomizudera was built using this traditional technique without a single nail. The veranda, overlooking the hill, was constructed on hundreds of pillars without any nails and has stood for hundreds of years. I wanted to capture the intricate details of that wooden structure and how grand yet elegant it stands on the foothills of Mount Otowa.
